Performing a [ chatsubu ] shou sugi ban siding take-off on drawings involves calculating the quantity of materials that will be needed for a project. Below is a in brief overview of the process:

  1. carefully examine the drawings, including elevations and wall selections, to identify all areas siding is to be installed. This includes trims, corners, walls, gables, soffits and facias.

  2. identify the types of materials to be used on drawings in all areas. Note any variations in styles, patterns or color tones.

  3. calculate the total surface area of each siding type by measuring lengths and heights. make sure to include windows + doors and deduct

  4. typically you will add a percentage called waste for cuts, errors, etc. this is a number that is different per contractor but we like to recommend a 10-15% number.

  5. do not forget to include items such as corner trims, soffits, facia and any other components that are part of your siding systems. These all should be included in you take-off.

  6. using the proper measurements and specs from the drawings, calculate the quantities of each of your materials. This can be done manually or with specialized software designed for construction take-offs.

  7. once you have your quantities, you or your contractor can estimate the cost by multiplying the total quantities by the unit cost on materials at the time.
